SISTER AVIS RIP
“We were saddened to hear of the death of Sr Avis at the grand age of almost 95.
Her life was so full that it could fill a book. She was a woman of many talents and gifts. At St Mary's, we knew and loved her as our Parish Sister, catechist, teacher, active member of the St Vincent de Paul Society, friend, and church organist. Through these many roles, she came into contact with countless parishioners and developed a deep awareness of the needs of families within our community. She carried out all her work with love, generosity, and a quiet confidentiality that earned the respect and affection of all who knew her. Her contribution to parish life was immense, and her part in one particular Christmas Fair has become the stuff of legend.
Among her many achievements was her service in Malawi, where she worked as a teacher and later as a headteacher, dedicating herself to the education and formation of young people.
In 2008–09, Sr Avis retired to the La Sagesse Community in Romsey, Hampshire, where her spirit of service continued as she volunteered in the local school. Long after she left East Finchley, Sr Avis remained greatly missed and deeply loved by her former community at St Mary's. We give thanks for her life of faith, service, and friendship, and we remember her with affection and gratitude. May she rest in peace.”
