This “temporary August change” will begin Saturday 2nd August and finish Sunday 24th August. Normal schedule will resume on Sunday 31st August.

BOOKING A MASS

Now is a good time to book a Mass for someone who has recently died, an anniversary or for someone who is unwell. Either visit or ring the parish office during office hours (Mon, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10am to 2pm) or send an email finchleyeast@rcdow.org.uk

SYNOD STUDY PROGRAMME

Please come and join the second session of our Synod study programme. They are reading and reflecting on the Final Document of the Synod and trying to discover what it could mean for the parishes in our Barnet Deanery. They are meeting in the Parish Centre on Saturday 26th July from 2.00pm-4.00pm In this second session (don’t worry if you missed the first one) they will be considering Part II of the document which focusses on Relationships and asking the following questions: What stands out to me in this chapter? What are the strengths in my parish in living, forming and nurturing relationships between men and women, in the family, in the local community, among social groups, religions and the whole of creation? What developments would I like to see in my parish in this area? If you would like a copy of the Synod Final Document: Please email chrisrosser@btinternet.com with your postal address. If you would like an overview of Part II of the document: Please view a video discussion using this link: https://www.schoolforsynodality.org.uk/book-club-part-2-anna-rowlands

SOME FUTURE DATES FOR YOUR DIARY:

SPECIAL BLESSING FOR THOSE STARTING OR RETURNING TO SCHOOL OR UNIVERSITY:

At the end of the 10am Mass on Sunday 7th September, Fr Peter will bless the uniforms (or any school equipment) of those beginning a new school, starting a new year, returning to college, or beginning university. Traditionally, Fr Peter also gives out medals to be sewn into uniforms, carried in pockets, or worn.

SVP – SOCIAL EVENING – SAVE THE DATE!

The SVP are planning a social evening with a hot, home-made supper on Saturday 11th October at 6 pm.  Full details and ticket sales will take place in September so more news then.

ST MARY’s PARISH RETREAT WEEK 2025

After the success of last year's Parish Retreat Week, Fr Peter has already begun organising another, which will take place in the autumn. This year's theme will focus on the Jubilee Year, “Pilgrims of Hope”, and Fr Peter has started arranging speakers. The retreat week will once again be hosted by Our Lady and will take place from Sunday 12th October to Friday 17th October.

A Personal Thank You from Me to You

As we ease into the slower days of summer, I want to take a moment to say thank you—from the bottom of my heart—to everyone who has supported St Mary’s this past year. Whether through your presence, prayers, or generosity, you’ve helped keep our parish vibrant, welcoming, and faithful.

To those heading away for a well-deserved holiday, I wish you peaceful days, safe travels, and joyful rest. I’ll be looking forward to welcoming you back home, refreshed and renewed.

A special word of thanks to Fr Dennis, Yvonne, Nina, Holly, Lin, Eimir and those who’ve helped with parish events, offered your time in ministry or behind the scenes with admin, guided others through catechetical work, or reached out to those most in need. Your dedication means so much—and I see it, even when it’s quiet or unseen.

With heartfelt gratitude and every blessing this summer — Fr Peter

BARNET HOSPITAL:

Fr Peter will be “on call” for Barnet Hospital every Saturday, he joins a group of local priests who provide daily sacramental cover. If you know you are going into hospital please see Fr Peter before your admission so he can anoint you. If you are admitted into hospital unexpectedly and would like to see a priest contact the nurse in charge of the ward, ideally during the day. Night-time calls should only be for emergencies

ST MARY’S NEWSLETTER

During August, the newsletter will go on a much-needed summer holiday and return rejuvenated in September.

If you are an adult who is thinking about becoming a Catholic, or you are an adult who has not made your First Holy Communion or Confirmation then you might like to consider joining the parish RCIA group. If you are interested, please see Fr Peter after Mass.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION PROGRAMME 2026

If your child is going to be in Year 3 in September and has received a Catholic baptism, they can apply for next year’s First Holy Communion Programme. The date for next year’s First Holy Communion Mass has been provisionally set for Sunday 7th June (although this may change if Fr Peter is required to attend a diocesan event). If you would like to register your child, please see Fr Peter after Mass, and collect an application form.

CONFIRMATION PROGRAMME 2026

The parish Confirmation Course for 2026 will soon be open for registration. This 8-week course is open to young adults in year 9 at secondary school who have been baptised and made their First Holy Communion. Please see Fr Peter after Mass if you are interested.
