JULIUS LIPNER RIP
The funeral for Julius will take place on Tuesday 30th June at 12:30pm. Let us keep Sandra and their two sons in our prayers at this time. May Julius rest in peace and rise in glory.
ALTAR SERVERS PRACTICE
There will be an altar servers’ practice at 11am on Saturday 11th July. This session is also ideal for children who have recently made their First Holy Communion, as well as for anyone else who would like to become an altar server.
We will also chat about plans for our next bowling trip, which is always great fun.
SUNDAY 5th JULY – 11am MASS
Fr Peter writes: “The special 11am Mass on Sunday 5th July gives us an opportunity to acknowledge the children, adults, and young adults of St Mary’s who have celebrated their First Holy Communion or been Confirmed.
We will also take a moment to recognise a birthday (or two), and I would be grateful for your prayers as it will be the 35th anniversary of my Ordination.
I will be joined by my brother and his wife, as well as Canon Mehall Lowry — a vocation of St Mary’s — who will be celebrating his own 35th Ordination anniversary in September.
No other clergy have been invited; let us keep the celebration ‘low key’ but enjoyable. You are also invited to bring a cake or two for us all to enjoy after Mass.”
CHILDREN’S MASS LIBRARY
We are hoping to revive our Children’s Mass Library — a small collection of Catholic picture books that young children can enjoy quietly during Mass, especially if they are not yet able to follow the full liturgy. If you have any Catholic picture books, Bible storybooks, or Lives of the Saints suitable for young children — and in good condition (no torn pages or scribbles) — we would be very grateful to receive them. Please leave any donations on the tables at the back of the church, and we will collect and display them for families to use.
“VOICES FROM THE FRINGE: ASKING WHO JESUS MIGHT BE.”
Our former parish priest Fr Terry Tastard has written a book of 25 short stories asking how ordinary people interpreted Jesus. Each is written in the first person. We hear a range of voices, such as a midwife, a physician, a religious expert, a spy, a bandit, an orphan and a waitress. They relate their encounter with Jesus as they piece together the clues and try to understand who he is. Each story is followed by related gospel passages, and an explanation of the cultural setting drawn from research of scholars into the historical Jesus. Each concludes with a spiritual reflection, about the message of Jesus for us. The book is called Voices from the Fringe: Asking who Jesus might be and is available from Amazon.
MURPHY FAMILY ANNIVERSARY
In August, the Murphy family of Montpelier Road will mark an extraordinary milestone — 100 years of living in the parish of St Mary’s. That is quite an achievement and certainly a record to be proud of. Congratulations to the entire Murphy family on reaching such a remarkable moment in their family and parish history. The gauntlet has now been thrown down… can anyone beat 100 years of continuous parish life?
BISHOP OSÓRIO CITORA AFONSO
We ask your prayers for the repose of the soul of Bishop Osório Citora Afonso, Bishop of Quelimane, Mozambique, who died tragically on 6 June 2026. We can now reveal that Bishop Afonso died as the result of a violent attack in his episcopal residence. He was found in the early hours of the morning, having been fatally shot. The authorities in Mozambique continue their investigations into this shocking incident. His death has deeply affected the Church in Mozambique and beyond. Bishop Afonso was widely admired for his humility, his pastoral dedication, and his commitment to peace and reconciliation.
Many of you will remember him personally, as he lived for a short time at St Mary’s during the time of Fr Tony. His gentle presence and warm manner left a lasting impression on those who met him. We commend Bishop Afonso to the mercy of God and hold in prayer his family, the Diocese of Quelimane, and the Consolata Missionaries. May he rest in peace.
PERFORMERS INCLUDE:
Helen Tierney has worked with music in a variety of settings including mainstream secondary education, prisons, eating disorder clinics and dementia units. As a pianist and choral singer, she has performed at Glastonbury, the Edinburgh Festival, Royal Variety performance & BBC Proms.
Liz Menezes used to tour the world singing many Gilbert and Sullivan roles with the Carl Rosa Opera Company, including all three little maids in the Mikado! She now leads the Aspidistra Drawing Room Orchestra and is also a member of a Bluegrass band called The Archway Mountain Lightnin’ Boys.
Camilla Cutts, mezzo soprano, has sung with Carl Rosa Opera Company, Scottish Opera and the National Opera Company of the Netherlands (Reisopera). She regularly sings with the Aspidistra Drawing Room Orchestra.
David Menezes has recently been described as one of the top Gilbert and Sullivan tenors of his time. He regularly stars with Charles Court Opera, Heritage Opera, Opera Anywhere, Forbear Theatre.
