November – Month of the Holy Souls.

In November we commemorate and pray for the “Holy Souls”, those we know and those we do not know who have died. You will find a Holy Souls envelope and blank sheet for you to complete with the names of those you wish to pray for. Please put the completed sheet into the envelope and return to church. Names of those who have died will be placed on the sanctuary during November and masses for the Holy Souls will be celebrated during this special month.

* This weekend, Fr Peter will take a candle after the 12 noon Mass on Sunday 6th November to the grave of Canon More-O’Farrell (responsible for building the parish centre and priests house) who is buried in East Finchley cemetery. You are very welcome to join Fr Peter.

*  Fr Peter will place a St Mary’s poppy wreath at 2pm on Sunday 13th November at the War Memorial in the grounds of Finchley Memorial Hospital to acknowledge the sacrifice of those who have died in war and conflict. All are welcome to join him.

* The “St Pancras Cemetery Mass” will be on Thursday 17th November at 2pm in the Burial Chapel. All are welcome and candles will be available to place on graves.

* For those who would like to learn more about the month of the Holy Souls, there will be a talk and discussion at 7:30pm on Tuesday 8th November in the small hall.

The Marble Register of Parish Priests:

The marble tablet which features the names of St Mary’s Parish Priests in the porch has finally been updated, but is not finished. Paintwork which highlights the names has to settle and be sanded down in a months’ time. How many Parish Priests have there been? A.20; B.14; C.18

Our Christmas Fair needs you - Sunday 27 Nov    Huge thanks to those who remembered to bring donations for the Christmas Fair. Please help us to make it a success as there are now only two more weekends left to bring donations before the fair on 27 Nov.

Please take home a flyer as a reminder of what to donate.

We particularly need bottles and chocolate for the Tombola; home-baked fruit cakes; and prizes for the raffle. Thank you.

Please look out for raffle ticket sellers. 1st prize £100; 2nd prize £75; 3rd prize £50 and other prizes.

If you can help us there are sign-up sheets at the church entrance. Thank you.

Lectio Divina:

The St Mary’s “Lectio Divina” zoom continues on Monday from 7:30pm – 8:30pm. Deacon Dom will host on Monday. Please email Fr Peter if you want to be part of the “Lectio Zoom Team”.

70th/125th Anniversary of St Mary’s:

Earlier this year we celebrated 70 years since the foundation stone of the present church had been blessed…………next year we celebrate 70 years since the church was opened and 125 years since the parish of St Mary’s was established. Double celebrations! In the next couple of weeks, you will hear about some fun events to help commemorate this marvellous year. It could be a Zumba, a quiz, a pilgrimage, a calendar!

It will be a fun and holy year nonetheless. Watch this 70th/125th space for more details.

Sick and Retired Priests – Second Collection This Weekend

This weekend’s second collection is for the Sick and Retired Priests’ Fund.  Please give generously and help ensure our sick and older priests are financially supported, having given us a lifetime of dedicated service.  They have baptised us, welcomed us into the church, and offered comfort and prayer at times of sorrow.  Now we have a chance to give back and ensure they have peace of mind during their senior years, when they may be facing failing health and declining mobility.  Please give generously using the envelopes in the church.  You can also donate online at www.rcdow.org.uk/donations - the envelopes and posters feature a ‘QR Code’ that you can scan with a phone camera to give online.  Thank you in advance for your kindness.

Circles of Life talks:

Beginning on Tuesday there will be four separate evenings exploring a different “circle of life” either preparing us for the year ahead, for Christmas or for eternity!  Each evening will either be presented by Holly, John Colby, Fr Peter or Deacon Dom. They hope to be informative, fun and prayerful.

The first presentation will explore the month of the Holy Souls and will take place in the Canon More O’Ferrell Hall (in the Parish Centre) on Tuesday 8th November at 7:30pm.

The second talk will be at 7:30pm on Tuesday 15th November and will look at the “liturgical cycle” – the beginning and end of a Church year and the colours and traditions of each season within that period.

On Tuesday 22nd November at 7:30pm it will be an opportunity to use your craft skills as you make an advent wreath and learn its significance and symbolism.

Finally, on Tuesday 6th December at 7:30pm, over some mulled wine and the odd mince pie there will be a presentation on the Advent “O” Antiphons. All are very welcome – let us learn, share and pray together.
