Save the Date!

Celebrations to commemorate 70 years since the present church was opened and 125 years since the parish of St Mary’s was established will happen on Sunday 17th September. Please “save the date”. You are all invited!

Director of Education at St Mary’s

Do you have experience working in Christian education and youth work? Would you like to make a real difference, using your skills to support a parish community?

St Mary’s Director of Education post is a pivotal one within the parish.  You will work closely alongside Fr Peter, to manage, develop, support and co-ordinate catechetical and sacramental programmes to facilitate growth in the spiritual and catechetical life of the parish. This is a paid part-time post of 15 hours a week. If you think you could be the next Director of Education in our parish, please visit: https://jobs.rcdow.org.uk/director-of-education-youth-work-east-finchley-parish/, where you will be able to apply directly. Also – have a chat with Fr Peter.

Congratulations to the St Mary’s Allotment Team:

Fr Peter writes: “If you go behind the church you will see an amazing allotment! Two weeks ago, the first produce was dug out – some radishes. Which were delicious. A big thank you to the wonderful allotment team. If you would like to be part of this green initiative, helping the environment and providing fresh food for the Foodbank, please fill out a “Time and Talent” survey and tick the allotment box!”

Next Weekend: First Holy Communions:

Just a reminder that next weekend parish children will be making their First Holy Communions. This will only affect the 10am and 12 noon Masses on Sunday. Let us keep these special children and their families in our prayers.

Refugee Week 19th - 25th June: Compassion

Monday June 19th is World Refugee Day, and kicks off Refugee Week. The theme for Refugee Week 2023 is Compassion. The Bishops Conference have just produced a new document called 'Love the Stranger'. If you would like more details of the document and Refugee Week please email rosalewis@rcdow.org.uk or contact Fr Peter.

The St Mary’s Time and Talents Survey 2023

Fr Peter writes: “Thank you to all those who volunteer within the parish. If you would like to volunteer or already do so,  please complete the attached “Time & Talents Survey” and return to me as soon as possible.

St Mary’s is a thriving parish which relies on you. Everyone has a particular skill. Just take the Time, fill out the survey and share your Talent!      The closing date to return your survey is Sunday 11th June.

The Wall:

Fr Peter writes:”Hopefully repairs to the Wall will begin this summer. I have accepted a quote and secured a team of builders. St Mary’s is now in a queue, waiting for the builders to finish two other projects. Wall repairs will involve the corner part of the embankment being dug out enabling the builders to “pin” the wall together. When they remove the earth I would like the builders to bury any broken Catholic religious statues or crucifixes that parishioners are hesitant about discarding. My intention is that the prayers rooted in these religious artifacts will hopefully protect the wall in the future. If you have any broken statues or crucfixes, please hand them in after a weekend Mass. However, they must not be made of plastic. Nor can the statues or crucifixes be “life size”….. for obvious reasons.

St Mary’s Men’s Group:

The “Men’s Group” met for the first time last Saturday. They had breakfast (cooked by Deacon Dom) and a good chat. Their next meeting is planned for Saturday 8th July at 9am, finishing at 11am. Breakfast will be served. Men of the parish are invited to attend – please let Fr Peter or Deacon Dom know if you would like to join.

Day for Life: 18 June 2023

The Church teaches that life is to be nurtured from conception to natural death. In England and Wales, Day for Life is celebrated on the third Sunday of June each year. This year it falls on 18 June. For the first time, it will be celebrated in Scotland and Ireland on the same day. The theme is ‘Listen to Her’ and focuses on post-abortion trauma and the impact of abortion primarily on women, but also men and others.

Each year a message is released, usually by the Church’s Lead Bishop for Life Issues, offering a reflection on the year’s theme. The 2023 message is unique in that the bishops’ have given it over to a Catholic woman who has had an abortion to share her experiences. Often the voices of women who have had an abortion are silent in Church and in society. The hope is that this will help break this silence and offer further opportunities for healing and reconciliation.

“If you deny the Trinity you will lose your soul.

If you try and explain it you will lose your mind.”

St Augustine.
