BAPTISM
If you would like your child to be baptised, please speak to Fr Peter. Ideally, at least one parent should be a baptised Catholic who attends Mass regularly.
SAVE THE DATE – SUNDAY 5th JULY – 11am MASS
Please add to your diaries an invitation to celebrate with Fr Peter on the joyful occasion of his 35th Anniversary of Ordination. We are delighted that Canon Mehall—who will also mark 35 years of Ordination in September and who served as Fr Peter’s Deacon on the day of his ordination—will be joining us for this special moment.
During the celebration, we will also honour our parish children, young adults, and RCIA candidates who have received their First Holy Communions and Confirmations this year. It is a wonderful opportunity to rejoice together as a parish family and give thanks for the many ways God continues to work in our community.
The gathering will be lowkey and relaxed, with a chance to enjoy a piece of cake and spend time together afterwards.
FR PETER WRITES……….
“I’m deeply grateful for the beauty of our church grounds, and I know many of you feel the same. They are a blessing to our parish and to all who come here seeking peace. Pat, our gardener, is doing sterling work keeping everything looking so lovely, but in this summer heat he could really do with all our help.
If you notice an area that needs a bit of tidying or tending—a stray weed, a dry flowerbed, a path that needs a quick sweep—I encourage you to step in and take care of it rather than wait to be asked. These small acts of care make a big difference.
Together, we can keep our parish grounds welcoming, beautiful, and worthy of the community they serve.”
POPE LEO’s ENCYLICAL: MAGNIFICA HUMANITAS
“Magnifica Humanitas”, the first encyclical of Pope Leo XIV, offers a timely and hopefilled reflection on what it means to safeguard human dignity in an age increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. Rather than treating technology as an enemy, the Holy Father invites the Church and the world to discern how these powerful tools can serve authentic human flourishing.
Pope Leo describes our moment as a crossroads. Humanity can either pursue a path of domination—building a new “Tower of Babel” rooted in selfsufficiency and power—or choose a path of communion, where technology strengthens relationships and supports the common good. This contrast sets the tone for the entire document: AI must never be allowed to reduce people to data or commodities, nor should its development be controlled by a small group of powerful institutions.
A key theme of the encyclical is that technology is never neutral. It reflects the values of those who design and use it. For this reason, Pope Leo urges society to shape AI with justice, solidarity, and moral responsibility. He warns against developments such as autonomous weapons and unchecked automation that could harm workers, distort truth, or deepen inequality.
Yet “Magnifica Humanitas” is far from pessimistic. The Pope insists that AI can be a genuine force for good when guided by a “civilisation of love.” Technology, he writes, should assist human beings—especially the vulnerable—rather than replace or diminish them.
One of the encyclical’s most beautiful insights concerns human limitation. In a culture obsessed with efficiency and enhancement, Pope Leo reminds us that our fragility and dependence are not flaws to be engineered away. They are places where we encounter one another and where God draws near.
Ultimately, “Magnifica Humanitas” is a call to ensure that technological progress never outpaces moral wisdom. It invites all people of goodwill to help build a future where innovation serves humanity, protects dignity, and strengthens the bonds of love that reflect the heart of the Gospel.
FIRST HOLY COMMUNION MASSES:
This year’s First Holy Communion Masses will take place on next Sunday 7th June at 10am and 12 noon. It would be wonderful if a few extra volunteers could help with the singing at the 12 noon Mass on Sunday 7th June.
CONFIRMATION MASS
This year’s Confirmation Mass will be at 5pm on Saturday 20th June. There will be 23 young adults being confirmed. Please keep them and their families in your prayers.
BRINGING HOLY COMMUNION TO THE HOUSEBOUND
There will be a special meeting for Eucharistic Ministers who bring Holy Communion to the housebound on Sunday 31st May after the 10am Mass. Fr Peter is always looking for new Eucharistic Ministers who feel called to serve the sick. If you would like to be considered for this ministry, please let him know.
PRAYING FOR OUR STUDENTS SITTING EXAMS
As a parish community, let us keep in our prayers all our secondary school pupils, college students, and university students who are undertaking public examinations at this time. We pray that the Holy Spirit will guide them, calm their anxieties, and bless their hard work with success. We also ask for the intercession of St Joseph of Cupertino, the patron saint of students and those preparing for exams, that he may watch over them and help them to do their very best.
May our young people know the support of their parish family and the peace of Christ during this demanding season.
