SUNDAY 5th JULY – 11am MASS
Fr Peter writes: “The special 11am Mass on Sunday 5th July gives us an opportunity to acknowledge the children, adults, and young adults of St Mary’s who have celebrated their First Holy Communion or been Confirmed.
We will also take a moment to recognise a birthday (or two), and I would be grateful for your prayers as it will be the 35th anniversary of my Ordination.
I will be joined by my brother and his wife, as well as Canon Mehall Lowry — a vocation of St Mary’s — who will be celebrating his own 35th Ordination anniversary in September.
No other clergy have been invited; let us keep the celebration ‘low key’ but enjoyable. You are also invited to bring a cake or two for us all to enjoy after Mass.”
ALTAR SERVERS PRACTICE
There will be an altar servers’ practice at 11am on Saturday 11th July. This session is also ideal for children who have recently made their First Holy Communion, as well as for anyone else who would like to become an altar server.
We will also chat about plans for our next bowling trip, which is always great fun.
TEN LESSER KNOWN FACTS ABOUT SAINTS PETER & PAUL
1. Both apostles ended their ministries in Rome, even though the Christian community there existed before they arrived.
2. Peter is not mentioned in Romans 16, suggesting he arrived in Rome only after Paul wrote the letter—likely in the late 50s or early 60s AD.
3. Paul’s conversion happened on a real street still existing today—the “Street Called Straight” in Damascus, which remains the headquarters of the Church of Antioch.
4. Peter and Paul publicly disagreed over how Gentile converts should be treated, leading to Paul “opposing Peter to his face” in Antioch.
5. This disagreement shaped early Christian identity, as the debate centred on whether Gentiles needed to follow Jewish law before becoming Christians.
6. Paul’s martyrdom is one of the earliest attested in Christian literature, with St. Ignatius of Antioch (c. 98–110 AD) referencing it explicitly.
7. Peter requested to be crucified upside down, not only out of humility but because he felt unworthy to die in the same manner as Christ—an early tradition preserved by multiple sources.
8. Paul never personally met Jesus during His earthly ministry, despite being one of Christianity’s most influential apostles.
9. Both apostles are patron saints of Rome, symbolizing unity despite their different backgrounds and theological tensions.
10. Their shared feast day (June 29) is one of the seven major holy days of obligation in the Catholic Church.
